Camming is one of the few genuinely flexible ways to earn online: you set your hours, your boundaries and your rates. It’s also a real job with real friction: slow first weeks, technical hiccups, and admin nobody warns you about. This guide covers how to start camming honestly, using LiveJasmin, the platform behind our live grids, as the example: requirements, costs, the first months, and protecting yourself from day one.
How to Start Camming: A Complete Beginner’s Guide

The non-negotiables
- You must be a legal adult and able to prove it. Every model’s identity is verified before she can stream. A site that skips verification is not one you want to work on.
- Free Chat has strict rules. No nudity or explicit content there, in any category, even in exchange for Surprises (tips). Never ask members for Surprises, credits or money, stay active while online, and never exchange contact details: that means an immediate ban.
- You need a way to get paid. US ACH and SEPA bank transfers each cost 1% (minimum $5 or €5, maximum $300 or €300); our payouts guide covers the rest.
- You’re self-employed in practice. Taxes are yours to handle: see the admin section below.
Choosing your platform and category
Platforms differ in audience, payout share and culture. Weigh four things:
- Payout share: here it’s level-dependent, from 30% to 80% according to the level reached in each period, and the level resets every period.
- Traffic volume: a high share on an empty site earns less than a lower one on a busy site.
- Privacy tools: you can ban certain countries from seeing you, and ban visitors who cross a line (see our safety checklist).
- Payment reliability: check model forums before committing.
Then pick your category, because it sets your obligations. In Nude categories, you must engage in nudity and follow members’ requests in private sessions, within site rules. In non-nude categories (Hot Flirt and Soul Mate), how far you go is up to you; there is also a Fetish category.
Equipment: start cheaper than you think
A classic beginner mistake is spending a fortune on gear before earning anything. What actually matters, in order:
- Internet speed: the one thing you can’t fake. The technical requirements set a minimum of 1.5 Mbps upload and 2 Mbps download, with 6 Mbps or more upload and 10 Mbps download recommended. Wired if possible.
- Lighting: an inexpensive ring light improves your stream more than an expensive camera.
- Camera: 1080p is recommended, and a decent 1080p webcam is plenty to start.
- Background: tidy, neutral and free of identifying details.
What the first months really look like
Honest expectations prevent quitting early. New accounts get a head start:
- The promotion period. A brand-new account starts at a default private rate of 0.98 credits per minute, and models priced at 0.98 appear under the Promo filter.
- Newbie benefits for 90 days. A “New” badge, a 1.99 minimum private rate after the promotion period (instead of 2.49), VIP Show buy-ins from 1 credit (instead of 3), Hot Deals up to 90% off (instead of 70%) and paid messages from 0.50 credits (see the newbie program page).
- Schedule beats talent. Streaming at the same times on the same days builds regulars faster than scattered hours, and members who add you to Favorites are notified when you go online.
- Your first regulars decide your income. A handful of returning members can out-earn a crowd of one-time visitors.
- Slow days happen to everyone, and they aren’t a verdict on you.
Setting boundaries before you need them
Decide your limits before your first stream, not mid-session under pressure. Choose a category that matches them, write them into your profile, and decide what gets someone banned (for 1 hour, 12 hours by default, 1 day, 1 week or 1 month). Models who set clear rules early get tested less. Our etiquette guide shows the viewer’s side of that social contract.
The unbreakable one: never do something you’re uncomfortable with because a Surprise was big. No amount is worth it. If your limits rule out explicit requests in private, a non-nude category is the honest fit.
The admin nobody mentions
Set these up in your first week, not months later: a dedicated bank account for your payouts, a spreadsheet of every payout received, and a note of your local tax rules for self-employed income. Some countries require registration from the first euro. Boring, but far cheaper than fixing it later.
How to start camming: FAQ
Can a partner or friend appear on camera with me? No: only the registered, ID-verified model may appear on camera.
How much can a beginner earn? Enormously variable; anyone quoting you a number is guessing. Income tracks consistency and regulars far more than looks.
Can I cam anonymously? From viewers, largely (see the safety checklist). From the platform, no: every model’s identity is verified.
Do I need to stream every day? No, but a predictable schedule matters more than volume. When you’re online, stay active: idling or sleeping on camera breaks the rules.
